Remembering When...

Okay so today’s topic is remember when...    For those people who had modest household and grew up wanting everything but getting what you got, “here’s to you!”

I was talking about homemade childhood pizza.  You know the one with a slice of bread, some cheese, onions, and ketchup.  Yes children make strange things when left to their hunger.  LOL. I definitely ate things as a child that my parents would walk in and act like they were in another house and just leave the room.  How about orange juice and cereal?  Oh yeah, been there and done that.  Do you recall the government cheese blocks?  Yep, I was a huge fan of the grill cheese from the bottom broiler.  If you can’t relate, just imagine any crazy meal or concoction that you made as a child and you get the picture.

Growing up without the age of micro-foods [microwave] gave you a freedom and license to use your imagination without boundaries.  We actually made “Rice Krispies” treats instead of buying them from the store.  Hunting for bottles and cans to turn in for 5 cents was pretty cool.  Why, well soda and a 10 cent cookie was well-earned, and it was a nice treat after a day in the pool with friends.

Today we live in a world where kids are mini CEO’s with all the electronics and parents are Uber drivers to and from events.  We don’t see groups of kids riding bicycles to practice, or handle bar riding with a buddy.  I’m not saying it was a better time, but there is something to be said about physical exploration and adventure that, perhaps children today may miss out on.

With that being said, I would say that we all turned out all right, and we didn’t burn the house down “purposefully.”  LOL. Thanks to all the parents that put up with us, and now it’s our turn.
