Children naturally see the world through Us - What will they see through You?
Having the opportunity to be a campus tour for kids is one of the best ways to spend a day.
Well, I was once a kid like any adult was. When I was a child all I wanted to do was play football, and play for the Dallas Cowboys. I had my helmet, and shoulder pads, and I would watch them on Sundays, and it was the best. Imagining I was my favorite player outside playing with my friends. Doing all the moves and trying to be a cowboys, just living the dream.
I know I am not alone in living the dream. If you take a moment from your day and close your eyes... ...now relax and try to remember what you lived for as a child. Sigh, and smile, and laugh. You are human!
Now we are adults, and as they say we LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD. The world never changed. We did.
Now kids look up to the kid that once was. What are we like, and what did we think grown-ups were like? We know the answers.
This is what I found walking around campus with students. They dream. They laugh. They trust. They are curious. They are smart! I was astounded to see the creativity of their minds, and the genuine belief they had. You see, no one told them they couldn't yet.
They saw the trades, skills, and technologies on our campus and their eyes brightened. The world is expanding and knowledge is truly acquirable on many different fronts. These children see a big beautiful world full of adventure or they can see a closed one.
Yes life is not all roses, but it ain't all thumbtacks either. The challenge is to present a world to them packaged in hope, optimism, reality, and practicality. I enjoyed walking campus laughing and have random conversations. It was okay to laugh at something silly, and to let them know that might be a little out there, but if you can dream it, it may be possible. I'm not saying everything a child says is reality, but for that one moment in time, when they are dreaming bigger than their eyes can see, let them dream. Encourage children. Enhance them. Show them a better world than we had because we make it better everyday.
There is enough wrong with the world. Let them see all that is right through us.
