In All things Related We may be More Alike than You Think

Last week Forsyth Technical Community College held its First Annual Constitution Day Virtual Discussion Panel.  The Panel consisted of elected and non-elected officials as well as the President of Forsyth Tech.

I was fortunate and honored to be one of the Moderators of the event, along with my peers Paulina Solis Page and Lauren Uy.  It’s amazing how you can work so hard for something, and then it is right there.  The night before the event, we were supposed to be sleeping, but there we were still ironing out details, and doing last minute preparation and research.

What does this have to do with the title of the blog?  I am glad you asked.  During the development of this event, there were discussions, plans, and conceptual ideas from various people.  I must give credit to everyone involved because they pulled it off, and I appreciate the teamwork that made this a reality.

So, in all things related, though we may come from different backgrounds, have opposite opinions, and views, when we work together, we find common grounds that we can all stand on.  The interesting part of this was the discussion between the panelists.

There was a line of thinking that said if you ask this question, you know what answer you will get back.  I am pleased to report that that didn’t happen.  In fact, political representatives from opposite party’s were in agreement on a lot of issues.  So, again in all things related, we may be more alike than you think comes into play.

Before you generalize and answer, it seems wise to allow people to reveal their thoughts on things because you may find out that they were thinking something entirely different than you expect.  I believe it was Maslov’s Hierachy of social needs that offers a realization that we need certain things as human beings.  The one thing we all want is to be understood and to understand.  It is just my opinion but it may not be six degrees of separation in our minds as we walk through life, but rather listening with the intent to understand AND not analyze that could help us the most.

As you go through your day seek the things that make for peace, and perhaps you will find that people are more alike than you think.
